Concert Review

On the eve of Daylight Saving, a show that many were anticipating was finally here! Rise Against fans lined up around the venue, excited to rock out to the Sold Out show of their U.S. Fall Tour, featuring special guests L.S. Dunes and Spiritual Cramp.
I arrived early at Jannus Live to explore the vibrant atmosphere on a Saturday night in St. Petersburg, Florida. Not only was this epic concert taking place, but a pub crawl was also in full swing, with many dressed in costumes to continue celebrating Halloween throughout the weekend.
SPIRITUAL CRAMP

Spiritual Cramp was the first to take the stage at 8 PM. With Jannus Live already packed and more fans arriving, the night was off to an electrifying start! This was Spiritual Cramp’s last performance on this tour, and as someone new to the band, I was thoroughly impressed, as were many others. Formed in San Francisco, California, they have been making waves in the music scene since 2017. Their energy was off the charts, blending punk, reggae, and rock to create a spellbinding performance. Vocalist Michael, feeling the heat of the moment, took off his shirt during their set, delivering a high-powered California punk rock sound to Florida! Great way to kick start the night!

L.S. DUNES

Next up was L.S. Dunes, taking the stage at 8:50 PM. By this time, everyone was already having a fantastic time! To my surprise, this supergroup is comprised of members from legendary bands, including Anthony Green of Circa Survive, Frank Iero of My Chemical Romance, Travis Stever and Tim Payne of Coheed and Cambria, and Tucker Rule from Thursday. Talk about a post-hardcore, emo supergroup! Their performance was as impressive as expected, with a unique energy that sent the crowd at Jannus Live into a frenzy. Vocalist Anthony Green was captivating, guiding the audience with hand gestures and entrancing gazes toward the sky. If you weren’t familiar with L.S. Dunes, you certainly should be now!

RISE AGAINST

As every concert goes, the long-anticipated wait came to an end as headliners Rise Against took the stage to close out the night! What a phenomenal performance these guys delivered, as they consistently do! This was my third time watching them perform; words will never capture the experience! Amidst the energy of the crowd, the crowd surfers, and the moshing, Rise Against has secured a place in the music industry that cannot be touched!
The night was filled with fun and unexpected surprises, especially since it was the night before vocalist Tim McIlrath’s birthday. Fans held up signs wishing him a happy birthday. At one point, Tim joked that a bird had just flown past them on stage.
During their acoustic rendition of “People Live Here,” they paused the performance to ensure no one was hurt in the crowd after a commotion. Once things settled, Tim humorously remarked, “Okay, oh shit, where was I? Oh yeah, I remember….you guys can’t do that shit cause then I gotta start songs in the middle of songs, and like, I quit school to start a band, and I’m not that smart, okay?” laughing it off before picking up where they left off and delivering an incredible performance.
Before the next song, Tim shared that he had been doing this for 25 years and had never been asked to play with a broken lens from sunglasses that had apparently fallen into the crowd. After testing it out, he noted that it worked surprisingly well, but his guitar tech probably wouldn’t be too happy. The crowd erupted in laughter, and right before the end of “Swing Life Away,” Tim grabbed the lens and said, “Fuck it, when in Florida,” taking it out of the mic stand and finishing the last verse and chorus of the song with the lens as his pick. Everyone loved it!
However, things took an unexpected turn when a guy climbed one of the posts like a monkey, impressively scaling more than halfway up before security managed to get him down safely. That was a first for me at this venue, and I’m sure for many others as well.
Wrapping up their energetic set around 11:30 PM, Rise Against will always be a force to be reckoned with. They remain true to their music, resonating with many who enjoy a good time! Let’s not forget that this show was sold out well in advance, a trend that seems true for this tour with countless sold-out shows!
