Modern Angst, a band from St. Louis, MO, has a powerful story rooted in both personal and societal struggles. The band was formed in 2021 by Jared White, who was driven to create music as a way to deal with the emotional turmoil brought on by the COVID pandemic and the larger social issues in America. The pandemic highlighted social and economic inequalities, and this inspired Jared to use music as an outlet for his feelings of frustration and fear.
The band members come from diverse musical backgrounds, adding to their unique sound. Jared has a punk background influenced by bands like The Clash and Bad Religion, after spending a decade touring with his previous band. David, who has experience in hardcore and reggae from his time in St. Louis, brings a different flavor. Nick’s background in punk and jam bands, along with Brandon’s experience in metal and punk, add even more variety. Together, they create a distinctive sound that blends punk, hardcore, and ska.
Modern Angst released their debut EP, “Trampled,” in January 2022, which helped establish their evolving sound. Now, they are preparing to release their first full-length album, “Part X,” on September 3rd, 2024, through Punkerton Records in Columbus, Ohio. This album represents the band’s growth and their exploration of a unique musical identity, blending their varied influences into one cohesive sound.
Lead singer, guitarist, and songwriter Jared White describes “Part X” as a response to that inner voice that tells you, “You’re not good enough” or “You’ll never achieve this or that.” It also addresses the societal pressure to meet unrealistic standards of perfection. While not a concept album, the overall theme is about personal growth and empowerment through the everyday struggles of life.
The band’s latest single from the album, “Never Promised Tomorrow,” has been released!! The band is excited for fans to hear it, saying, “This is one of our favorite songs to play live, and we’re stoked for you to hear it!”
