Calva Louise Announces Upcoming Album “Edge of the Abyss” July 11th

The captivating journey of Calva Louise continues as the band reveals their upcoming studio album, “Edge of the Abyss”, set to release on July 11 through Mascot Records. This album encapsulates the unique story of the band members, who found each other from various corners of the globe.

To mark this exciting announcement, they’ve released a powerful new single titled “Aimless,” which explores the complexities of human connection. The accompanying video is available to watch now.

The narrative of Calva Louise begins with vocalist Jess Allanic, who at the age of 10 began drawing in her home in Guarenas, Venezuela. This was where the initial concept for her tale of a hidden world intertwined with ours took shape.

“Edge of the Abyss” presents themes of characters traveling through different dimensions, encountering mysterious doubles that resemble us. These figures raise intriguing questions: Who are they? What do they desire from us? How can we establish communication with them?

The visually stunning videos for singles such as “W.T.F,” as well as “La Corriente” and “Under The Skin,” showcase these encounters across various times and worlds, all directed and featuring VFX by Jess.

Jess’s rise as an artist comes against the backdrop of Venezuela’s severe economic and social crises. Aspiring to live in the UK, she made the bold move to Rouen, France, just shy of her 16th birthday, where she began her musical journey—often getting reprimanded by nuns for playing guitar in her room.

In France, she met Alizon Taho at a school reminiscent of “Hogwarts.” Alizon reflects, “I was focused on being in a band, and that’s exactly when Jess arrived in my class.” Together, they explored the UK music scene, taking on every opportunity presented to them despite language barriers and the challenges of being foreign musicians.

“Our album is called “Edge of the Abyss” because that’s how we live. One misstep and everything could fall apart,” Jess reflects. “I emigrated twice, so I’ve already had a culture shock twice. This hurts a little less because this is where I want to be. I have nowhere to go back to,” she adds.

Drummer Ben Parker, who moved from New Zealand to the UK at 14, joined the duo to complete the lineup, forming a captivating brotherhood among the three. They have built a robust DIY ethos, gaining prominence on the UK live circuit, performing at prestigious festivals, and toured with well-known bands like Psychedelic Porn Crumpets and Bloodywood.

In 2023, their independently released mixtape “Over The Threshold” showcased Jess’s creative evolution, catching the attention of Pendulum’s Gareth McGrillen, who co-produced “Edge of the Abyss”.

Their story has garnered support from various media outlets, including BBC Radio 1 and Metal Hammer, as they delve into their multi-dimensional narrative.

Ultimately, the dream of a 10-year-old girl in Venezuela, drawing her sci-fi vision, has intertwined with the dreams of both Jess and her bandmates, leading them to create an innovative and immersive experience with each release.

“Our willpower never dies, that’s the thing. It’s been hard learning every day, but look at the friendship we have. We say that it’s like the path of the warrior,” Jess proclaims.
