The Richmond instrumental post-metal band previews its October album with a title track centered on isolation, growth and the erosion of human connection.
Richmond, Virginia instrumental band Shy, Low has shared “Purity Spiral,” the title track and second single from its forthcoming album of the same name, due October 16, 2026 through Pelagic Records.
Accompanied by a music video, “Purity Spiral” offers another look at the seven-track record ahead of its fall release. The song follows “The Bloat” in introducing the next chapter of the band’s atmospheric approach to post-metal and post-rock, this time pairing its instrumental format with a concept focused on technological dependency and its effects on human relationships.
Despite the absence of vocals, Shy, Low has attached a specific thematic framework to the title track.
“‘Purity Spiral’ is an exploration of the feedback loop of technological dependency, and the effect it has on our relationships with others and ourselves,” the band explained. “The more we worship the golden idolatry of growth, the further from our humanity we seem to stray. Self-isolation is a contagion destroying the bonds between us all.”
That idea gives the instrumental composition a narrative foundation without requiring lyrics to communicate it. The band instead works through changes in dynamics, repetition, texture and intensity — characteristics that have become central to Shy, Low’s position between post-rock’s atmospheric qualities and the heavier weight of post-metal.
The forthcoming Purity Spiral continues that emphasis on contrast while moving the band toward heavier territory. According to information accompanying the album announcement, the record was constructed around layered arrangements, rhythmic detail and gradual shifts in tension, allowing quieter passages to develop alongside considerably heavier sections.
Drums play a particularly important role in establishing momentum across the record, supporting arrangements that rely on progression and accumulation rather than traditional vocal-driven structures. Melody, distortion and ambient elements are similarly used as parts of the compositions’ larger arcs.
For listeners unfamiliar with Shy, Low, that approach is an important part of understanding the band. The Richmond group operates entirely instrumentally, leaving guitars, bass and drums responsible not only for melody and rhythm but also for carrying the emotional movement normally reinforced by a vocalist.
The current lineup features Dylan Partridge on drums, Gregg Peterson, Zak Bryant and Kai Zamora on guitars, and Drew Storcks on bass.
With “Purity Spiral” following “The Bloat,” listeners now have two previews of the album before its October release. The complete record will contain seven tracks, opening with “Grace” and moving through compositions including “Palmistry,” “Burning Fields,” “The Charging, Brazen Bull” and “Greenwood.”
The title track’s focus on technological dependence also gives the upcoming album a clearer conceptual dimension. Rather than relying solely on abstract atmosphere, Shy, Low has connected the song to questions surrounding isolation, relationships and a culture increasingly driven by technological growth.
Purity Spiral is scheduled for release October 16 through Pelagic Records.
