James Thompson’s solo black metal project introduces the record with “Fragmentation,” a closing track centered on grief, acceptance, and moving forward.
Encasement, the solo black metal project created by James Thompson, will release its self-titled debut full-length on September 4 through Hypaethral Records and I, Voidhanger Records.
Ahead of the album’s release, Thompson has shared “Fragmentation,” the record’s closing track and first single. The song offers an early look at a project built around grief, reflection, emotional release, and the process of confronting experiences that had previously remained unexpressed.
Encasement began in 2024 as what Thompson initially approached as a creative exercise. The project took on a more personal direction while he was working on the opening passage of “Exodus,” which unexpectedly connected with a collection of poems he had written years earlier.
That discovery became a foundation for the album. Some of its earliest material developed spontaneously, while later songs were approached more deliberately as Thompson explored emotions surrounding loss, memory, and the difficulty of moving forward.
“Fragmentation” serves as the album’s central statement, according to Thompson, addressing both the recurring nature of grief and the temptation to idealize the past.
“This track is the central statement of the project, both musically and lyrically; accepting what is gone, allowing oneself to grieve, reconnecting with the true self, and letting go. It explores the ways grief can show up in unexpected moments, and how its influence seems to be cyclical. How tempting it is to fall into the comfort of romanticizing your past, and how difficult it can be to give yourself the grace to move forward without guilt. I wrote fragmentation as a way to confront and detangle an unhealthy web I’d woven for myself.”
Musically, Encasement is rooted in black metal while incorporating ideas drawn from death metal, progressive music, and experimental composition. The project cites artists including Liturgy, Deafheaven, Thantifaxath, and Gorguts among its heavier influences, while Thompson also looked toward composers Dmitri Shostakovich, Sergei Prokofiev, and Maurice Ravel during later stages of the writing process.
Rather than approaching the album from a conventional production background, Thompson built much of the record through experimentation and instinct. He handled the album’s recording, mixing, and mastering himself, allowing the project’s production choices and performances to develop alongside the songwriting.
That do-it-yourself approach extends across the debut’s six tracks, beginning with “Inertia” and moving through “Exodus,” “Apparitions,” “The Pillory,” and “Absolution” before concluding with “Fragmentation.”
The September release will also mark the first full-length statement from Encasement since the project’s formation, giving Thompson a vehicle separate from a traditional band structure to explore both heavier musical ideas and deeply personal subject matter.
Physical editions of Encasement are planned through both labels. Hypaethral Records will issue the album on LP, including 100 copies on Blood Red vinyl, while I, Voidhanger Records will release 200 CD copies in a six-panel digipack.
