The Pittsburgh metalcore band’s sixth album, From A Distance, arrives September 4 via Pure Noise Records, followed by a September U.S. headlining tour.
Pittsburgh metalcore band 156/Silence has released “Swept From Under (Call of the Void),” the latest preview of its forthcoming sixth album, From A Distance, due September 4 via Pure Noise Records. An official music video for the track is also available.
The song takes its title and subject matter from the psychological pull toward unwanted, destructive thoughts, with the band using that experience as the foundation for one of the album’s darker examinations of the mind.
“The call of the void is the voice in our heads that wants to self-destruct even when we don’t feel bad. A compulsion to hurt ourselves even if we don’t want to. Being swept from under by intrusive thoughts.”
“Swept From Under (Call of the Void)” arrives as 156/Silence prepares for the release of an album that continues ideas explored on 2024’s People Watching while widening the scope of the band’s songwriting. From A Distance examines subjects including social behavior, celebrity worship, personal relationships, instability, and intrusive thoughts from a broader perspective.
The 12-track record was produced by Josh Schroeder, whose credits include Lorna Shore, King 810, and The Plot In You. It will also mark 156/Silence’s first album released through Pure Noise Records.
Musically, the band has continued expanding beyond the chaotic metalcore and mathcore foundation heard throughout its earlier catalog. People Watching introduced a stronger emphasis on sung choruses and hooks, an approach guitarist and primary songwriter Jimmy Howell said the group deliberately developed further on the upcoming album.
“It went so well that we decided to double down on that.”
That progression is paired with a greater focus on atmosphere throughout From A Distance. The band has cited the sound and mood of games including Resident Evil and Silent Hill among its creative reference points, as well as the surreal storytelling associated with Twin Peaks. The album opens with a sample from the Apple TV series Severance.
The record also includes three guest vocal appearances. Mike Hranica of The Devil Wears Prada joins 156/Silence on “Cannon Fodder,” Alex Reade of Make Them Suffer appears on the title track, and Tony Castrati of Crippling Alcoholism guests on “Collateral.”
From A Distance follows a period of significant growth and loss for the band. After forming in Pittsburgh in 2015, 156/Silence released Undercover Scumbag in 2018, Irrational Pull in 2020, and Narrative in 2022 before reaching another turning point with People Watching in 2024.
The band followed that album in 2025 with the standalone single “Our Parting Ways,” released in tribute to longtime bassist Lukas Booker, who died unexpectedly earlier that year.
The current 156/Silence lineup consists of vocalist and lyricist Jack Murray, guitarists Jimmy Howell and Ryan Wilkinson, drummer Kyle O’Connell, and bassist Mike Ernst.
On the live front, 156/Silence is currently in the middle of its North American run with Chiodos, sace6, and Second Harbour, which began July 30. With the article publishing on August 18, the remaining dates begin August 19 in Toronto and continue through August 29 in Nashville.
The band will also play three headlining shows with Coldstate from August 20 through August 22 before launching the From A Distance Tour on September 9 in Worcester, Massachusetts. Aviana, Heavensgate, and Fromjoy will support that U.S. headlining run, which continues through October 3 and includes a September 20 appearance at Louder Than Life.
