The Finnish melodic death metal band’s second album single pairs a tragic love story with one of the record’s faster, live-focused performances.

Insomnium have released the music video for “Gleam in the Black,” the second song revealed from the Finnish melodic death metal band’s upcoming album, Netherworlds.

The group’s tenth studio album is scheduled for release October 16. “Gleam in the Black” follows the previously issued “Shadowlife” and offers another look at a record built around loss, longing and the darker emotional spaces that have long shaped Insomnium’s music.

Although the new single carries the melancholy associated with the band, vocalist and bassist Niilo Sevänen described it as one of the faster tracks on Netherworlds. Its pace is expected to translate directly into the group’s live performances as Insomnium prepares for an extensive touring schedule.

“Being one of the faster songs on the new album, this is a track that should get the crowd moving when played live. It definitely carries a classic INSOMNIUM spirit,” Sevänen said. “The lyrics tell a dark and mysterious love story, capturing the mood and atmosphere of the entire album. We are doomed to wander the nightly woods, searching for something lost long ago, something we can reach only in our dreams. That single gleam of light amidst the blackness.”

The accompanying video was directed and produced by Patric Ullaeus of rEvolver Film Company AB. Its visual direction follows the song into the nocturnal setting described by Sevänen, placing the track’s mix of romantic loss and unresolved searching at the center of the presentation.

“Gleam in the Black” also demonstrates the contrast that continues to define Insomnium’s approach: melodic guitar passages and atmospheric detail set against heavier rhythms and death-metal vocals. Rather than treating speed and melancholy as opposing ideas, the track brings them together within a more urgent arrangement.

Netherworlds marks the beginning of a new production period for the band. Producer and engineer Miiro Varjus worked closely with Insomnium throughout the album’s creation, helping develop and refine its sound before the project moved into its final production stages.

The album was mixed by Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studios and mastered by Tony Lindgren. Insomnium have previously worked with the Fascination Street team, and the collaboration continues here as the band enters its tenth-album chapter.

The current Insomnium lineup features Sevänen alongside drummer Markus Hirvonen and guitarists Markus Vanhala, Tomy Laisto and Ville Friman. Vanhala, Laisto and Friman also contribute clean vocals, expanding the vocal and melodic range available across the record.

Netherworlds will be released digitally and in several physical configurations. Those editions include a deluxe two-CD artbook, a standard jewel-case CD and multiple double-vinyl pressings. Limited vinyl variants will be available through the band and selected retailers, while a translucent sea-blue edition is planned for the United States.

Insomnium’s supporting tour cycle has already begun with summer festival activity. The band performed at Kaaos Festival in Tampere on July 24 and will continue with appearances at Rockstadt Extreme Fest in Romania, Brutal Assault in the Czech Republic and a show with Amorphis at Olavinlinna in Savonlinna.

The album’s October 16 release will coincide with the opening date of a Finnish tour supported by Kaunis Kuolematon. That run will continue through November 7.

Insomnium will then join Amorphis and Unto Others for a European tour scheduled across January and February 2027. The itinerary includes dates in Germany, Poland, Hungary, Austria, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, France and the Netherlands.
