MEATWOUND Drops New Single “Frank Stallone”; Macho Set to Release May 9th via Threat Collection Records

Florida’s hardcore sludge innovators, MEATWOUND, have unleashed their latest single, “Frank Stallone.” This track is part of their upcoming full-length album, Macho, which will be released on May 9th by the newly established Threat Collection Records, headed by producer/engineer Ryan Boesch, known for his work with Whores, Melvins, Helmet, and Andrew W.K.

Vocalist Daniel Wallace shares insight into the track’s creation: “‘Frank Stallone’ originally had a Michelangelo-inspired title but upon completion, felt more like another famous Italian. [Bassist] Marty [Iglesias] built the track over many days, with countless hours of tweaking and checking mixes on a bluetooth boombox. We never took the song to band practice, so the other guys weren’t familiar with it. [Drummer] Dimitri [Stoyanov] finished his tracking in the studio and was about to break down his kit when he heard ‘Frank…’ for the first time. He had ideas he wanted to try, leading to real drums on the end. Marty recorded all the guitar tracks before persuading Ari [Barros] to add even more. My first pass at vocals happened in the studio, which required a few takes to nail down.”

Wallace describes the song’s lyrics as being “about stretching your face and doing lies,” capturing a vibe somewhere “between Tetsuo and the roller rink,” and creating a scene akin to “spinning on cardboard in the subway next to fresh vomit piles at 4:00am.”

Formed circa 2014 in the Mudhaus, MEATWOUND made waves with their initially released demo turned debut, Addio, back in 2015. Known for its raw, incendiary sound, the album earned fans and featured distinctive cover art by Steak Mtn that soon adorned shirts around Tampa.

The band’s evolution continued with their second LP, Largo, in 2017, which delivered more intricate compositions, richer noise layers, and even included danceable beats. Their third effort, Culero, followed in 2019, diversifying their sound further with cinematic elements and intense blasts.

Enter the Macho era: a slow but meaningful progression enhanced by multiple demos, rewrites, and fresh tracks before they recorded at Candor Recording Studio in the summer of 2024. With Boesch’s expertise and patience, MEATWOUND harnessed a powerful new sound, resulting in the band’s most ambitious work yet.

Reflecting on Macho, Wallace, speaking in a playful “outside source” persona, muses, “Macho? Old man shit. Inescapable to not mention age when discussing MEATWOUND as most members are hovering around and beyond 50 years of earth living, yet still refuse to leave music creation to the youth. So what do the decades of song writing and instrument playing yield in this situation? Reticence and frustration, a sense of urgency to incorporate more sounds while taking five years to write, demo, and eventually record the nine new tracks on the album. Retaining the essence of MEATWOUND’s bold expansion.”
