SONS OF RA fans, get ready! Metal Injection has just dropped the exclusive premiere of the Chicago-based prog metal and jazz fusion trio’s latest video, “Lividity And The Ascension.” This track is part of their upcoming debut LP, “Standard Deviation”, set to release on April 11th through Free Electric Sound.
Emerging onto the scene two decades ago, SONS OF RA has masterfully fused elements of heavy prog, jazz, math rock, and avant-garde music, captivating jazz fusion enthusiasts and prog rock purists alike. With four independent EPs under their belt and an internationally acclaimed suite, “Tropic Of Cancer”, from 2024, the group is now poised to make a significant impact with their first full-length album.
“Standard Deviation” delves deep into the essence of avant-garde jazz and fusion, juxtaposed with the raw force of metal. The album includes creative takes on pieces by jazz legends like Carla Bley, John Coltrane, and Don Ellis, along with a wealth of original material showcasing the band’s diverse influences. The recording process took place at Palisade Studios in Chicago with Spenser Morris, and the album was mastered by Grammy-winning engineer Alan Douches in New York.
The music video for “Lividity And The Ascension” was directed by Doozy and features Keith Wakefield’s composition. According to Wakefield, “‘Lividity And The Ascension’ is one of the tracks that I brought to the album. While the title might seem morbid, for me the piece is about shedding the old and triumphantly moving on to the future.”
Metal Injection praises the track for its compelling mix of jazz and metal, asserting, “If you’re in need of some jazzy metal goodness up in your ears today, this is certainly it.”
The much-awaited “Standard Deviation” will be available in digital, CD, and LP formats, with preorders currently live through the Lasers Edge Group’s Free Electric Sound, and on Bandcamp. Along with the album release, SONS OF RA album release show on April 12th, and performances in Indiana and Kentucky later in April.
