Symphonic and medieval metal collide on “Reckless Sailor (Black Flag Rises),” a collaborative single inspired by Ubisoft’s latest Assassin’s Creed project.
Visions of Atlantis have unveiled a new collaborative single, “Reckless Sailor (Black Flag Rises),” joining forces with German medieval metal veterans Saltatio Mortis for a fresh interpretation of the traditional sea shanty “Drunken Sailor.”Released alongside an official music video, the track was created in partnership with Ubisoft Germany to celebrate the launch of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced.
Rather than offering a straightforward cover, the two bands reshape the well-known maritime classic through their distinct musical identities. Visions of Atlantis bring the cinematic orchestration and symphonic metal sound that has become synonymous with the band, while Saltatio Mortis contribute their signature blend of medieval instrumentation and modern rock influences. The result is a new version of the centuries-old song that reflects the nautical themes closely associated with the Assassin’s Creed universe.
Fronted by the vocal pairing of Clémentine Delauney and Michele Guaitoli, “Reckless Sailor (Black Flag Rises)” combines orchestral arrangements, heavy guitars, and seafaring melodies into a composition that aligns with the adventurous atmosphere of Ubisoft’s pirate-inspired franchise. According to the announcement, the collaboration was designed to capture themes of freedom, courage, and life beyond convention while celebrating the latest Assassin’s Creed release.
The project also continues a thematic direction that Visions of Atlantis have explored in recent years. Their 2022 album Pirates established a strong maritime concept that was expanded further on Pirates II – Armada, released in 2024. Those records helped solidify the band’s reputation within modern symphonic metal, making a collaboration centered around pirate folklore and nautical storytelling a natural extension of their recent creative output.
For Saltatio Mortis, the collaboration highlights another opportunity to merge traditional European folk elements with contemporary heavy music. Since forming in 2000, the German group has become one of the country’s best-known medieval rock acts, incorporating instruments such as bagpipes, hurdy-gurdies, and percussion into their music while maintaining a strong rock foundation. Their energetic live performances have earned them appearances at major European festivals including Wacken Open Air, M’era Luna, and Summer Breeze.
The release also arrives during an active touring period for Visions of Atlantis. Throughout the summer, the band is appearing at several European festivals before joining Kamelot and Frozen Crown for the North American Dark Asylum World Tour, which includes stops across the United States and Canada.
